Legal aid for Missouri domestic violence victims

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Domestic Violence on Friday, November 6, 2015.

Domestic violence is one of the most serious and tragic issues that a person can endure. Being mistreated emotionally, psychologically, physically or in any other capacity in your own home, likely by someone you trust or love, can be an extremely traumatic experience. That kind of betrayal makes the act even more frightening, and feeling unsafe in your home can take a serious toll on your mental well-being. You will likely become more stressed, and the inability to focus may impact your daily life.

Fortunately for victims of domestic abuse, the law in Missouri is very clear about how such cases are treated. Domestic abuse is a crime, and victims of domestic violence can bring charges against their abusers in order to make the abusers face the legal consequences of their actions. However, for nearly every domestic violence accusation, there will likely be court proceedings of some kind, which may require victims to face their abusers.

If a person pleads not guilty to domestic violence, then a victim may be called to testify against the abuser in order to strengthen the prosecution. Obviously, this can be very frightening for the victims, who may still suffer emotional or physical trauma due to injuries suffered at the hands of the accused. This is why it can be extremely beneficial to enlist the aid of an attorney in such cases.

Unfortunately, an attorney cannot take your place on the witness stand, but legal aid can help you prepare a statement that may help you feel more comfortable when providing your testimony. Alternatively, additional legal avenues could be explored that may help you give your testimony without having to suffer the stare of your alleged abuser.
