Protective orders can help victims of domestic abuse

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Domestic Violence on Friday, February 5, 2016.

There are few circumstances that can truly match the fear and anguish brought upon by domestic abuse. For many people, it is simply impossible to imagine that the idea of home, the place that should be safe and relaxing, is more like a torturous prison. People often tell victims to simply walk away, as though it were as easy as packing up and moving out. However, victims often feel threatened and worry about their own safety and the safety of their loved ones if they leave.

One of the premier legal defense options for victims of domestic abuse in Missouri is to seek out an order of protection. Protective orders can offer a number of different protections, including forbidding people to enter a dwelling, forbidding them to visit or contact victims and even require them to stay outside of a certain radius of the person being protected.

Any adult who has been the victim of abuse at the hands of a present or former household or family member can apply for an order. Likewise, adults who have been subject to stalking may also apply. Protective orders can last up to one year, and they can be renewed at the time of their expiration, offering a level of legal protection for victims who desperately need the assistance.

You may be afraid that you have no choice but to suffer domestic abuse, but there are legal options available to you. You do not have to suffer domestic abuse. If possible, contact a Missouri attorney to learn how you can take steps toward having an order of protection placed on you and your family as soon as possible.
