7 ways to de-stress during divorce

52507605_S.jpgIn our last post, we discussed various elements of the legal system that could be used to your advantage when it comes to divorce and managing the stress that comes with navigating the legal process.

In this post, we are going to look at some helpful things you can do to take care of yourself and manage your stress outside of the legal system. These tips can help you prioritize your well-being and minimize the toll that divorce can take on your health.

  1. Start an exercise routine. Going for a walk a few times a week, taking out your frustration in a kickboxing class or centering yourself though yoga can help you feel better in more ways than one.
  2. Prioritize positive relationships. Spend time with family and friends to boost your mood and surround yourself with support.
  3. Treat yourself in little ways. Spending too much money on lavish pampering can be a bad idea during a divorce. Instead, find little ways to brighten your day, like indulging in your favorite dessert or enjoying a cup of coffee outside on a nice day.
  4. Make your bedroom a sanctuary. Not only can this help you reclaim your independence at home, it can also improve your sleep and make you feel more at ease.
  5. Talk it out. Speaking with a counselor, therapist or trusted advisor can be crucial in ensuring you do not keep your emotions inside or become overwhelmed by stress.
  6. Try out new hobbies. Divorce can change how you think about your identity. Shake things up and try things you've always wanted to experience or learn.
  7. Be patient with yourself. Divorce is a very difficult process, and one that is going to take a toll on you. Allow yourself to be upset and cry when you need to, as holding it all in can just make you more stressed and anxious.

These tips can help you manage the difficult emotions and experiences of divorce and take charge of your mental and physical well-being. Another tip is to lean on others, like your attorney, for support as you navigate this process. With care, patience, love and support, you can get through this upsetting experience and focus on the future.
