Cheating more common than many might think

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Family Law on Thursday, January 24, 2013.

There are many reasons for a couple to break up, including infidelity. Cheating, whether it was a one-time thing or something that happened multiple times with multiple partners, is something that can break the trust in a relationship.

The Normal bar, which was an extensive survey polling more than 100,000 people, found that 33 percent of men and 19 percent of women have cheated in the past. Of those who have cheated, 23 percent of men and 17 percent of women said it happened only once. However, 33 percent of men and 36 percent of women admitted to cheating between two and five times, while more than 40 percent of men and women admitted to cheating on a more consistent basis.

When looking at infidelity, there are many things that can come into play. For example, more than a third of men and 13 percent of women who have cheated admitted that it happened while away on a business trip. Interesting enough, the likelihood to give into temptation and cheating on these trips increased between the six and nine year mark of a relationship. This is also the same time period when relationships need the most attention.

Cheating with an ex was also rather common, even more so among women. However, for both men and women, the rate of unfaithfulness with an ex increased to 42 percent between the two and five year mark of a relationship.

Whether infidelity was an issue in the relationship or not, when children are involved, remember that breaking up is no longer just a simple moving out and moving on. Rather, decisions will need to be made regarding things like child custody, child support and visitation.
