NFL player accused of domestic abuse

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Domestic Violence on Monday, January 7, 2013.

Recently, Robert Sands, a safety who plays for the Bengals, was arrested after allegedly physically assaulting his wife. The football player was arrested Friday morning. The incident reportedly took place in the couple’s home.

Not much is known about the alleged incident, but it is known Sands was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault in a domestic incident. His wife was also supposedly treated in the hospital with minor injuries.

While not much can be spoken to this case — as the details are yet to be reported — the fact that Sands is accused of domestic abuse is something any Missouri resident can learn from.

In Missouri, there are very strict laws regarding domestic violence. These laws are in place to try and protect the victims from their abusers.

In situations where abuse is a factor, this can also play a role in any family law issues, such as child custody and child visitation. Of course in situations where the abuse is real, things like restraining orders and supervised visitations may truly be in everyone’s best interests.

However, in some cases, while it’s disturbing to even think about, there are spouses or significant others who lie about domestic abuse in order to try and have an upper hand in the courtroom. For example, in some cases an ex-wife will try and claim that she was abused in the hopes of having a custody case go the way she prefers.

Due to the role domestic violence can play in any family law court case, it is important to make sure an attorney is involved any time there are accusations of abuse. This attorney can play the role of advocating for the person who was abused, or defending in cases where there are false accusations of abuse.
