What types of issues might a separation agreement cover?

Legal separation is not a particularly difficult concept, but it is unknown to many people, so it's not surprising that the average Missouri resident might have questions about the process. Legal separation is, in many ways, a trial for divorce. It allows couples to experience what life would be like if they were divorced without actually ending their marriage in the eyes of the law.

Many people are familiar with some of the biggest points of divorce, such as spousal support and child custody. However, it can be difficult to tell exactly how these factors will play out after a divorce, and having a better idea of what will be expected of you after divorce may factor into your decision. For instance, if you enter into a separation agreement and realize that a significant portion of your paycheck will go to child support and that you will seldom see your child, you may decide to work through your marital issues.

In addition to learning more about the most common factors, a separation agreement can also help you learn more about other factors that are less well-known. Separating two lives that were once joined is a very complex process, and there are many factors that people may not consider, such as asset division, insurance coverage, and debt and financial account information.

If you would like to have a better idea of what a separation agreement might cover, consider looking at a sample separation agreement. Alternatively, you could consult with a family law attorney who has experience practicing in the state of Missouri, ensuring that you have a much more specific idea of what you can expect based on your state's particular laws.
