Military life may incentivize young marriage

38789852_S.jpgIf you serve in the military or have ever served in the military, chances are that you know or knew an extremely young couple that married in their early twenties, perhaps even in their late teens. It is not uncommon for young military couples for a variety of reasons, but the numbers speak for themselves. More than 40 percent of active military service members are in their early twenties, and of those 40 percent, more than half are married.

There are many reasons that military service members tend to get married at a younger age, but some psychologists postulate that it has to do with the ominous nature of military life. Every service member knows that he or she might not come back from deployment, and they want to leave behind someone who will remember them, or a child to carry on their legacy. It is a beautifully romantic idea, and it has led many military members to happy marriages.

Unfortunately, not all marriages survive the struggles of military life. The idea of marrying before deployment sounds wonderful in theory, but as the months and years drag on and spouses spend more and more time away from one another, the strain on a marriage can become impossible to manage. In some instances, the young couples may grow into different people who are shaped by vastly different experiences and later find that they are no longer compatible.

It is not a crime to admit that your marriage is not making you as happy as it did, or that the life you expected did not end up being the life you got. Military life is extremely hard, and it is not for everyone. If you live in Missouri, and you are unsure of the future of your military marriage, consider meeting with an attorney to discuss your options and learn how divorce might affect your life.
